Ever wondered what happens when you try to play hide and seek with your dogs? Well, I decided to find out — and let me tell you, it was hilarious, heartwarming, and slightly chaotic.
It all started on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The weather was too hot to do much outside, so I figured it was the perfect time for a little indoor fun. I have two dogs — Max, a playful golden retriever, and Luna, a sharp little border collie. Both are smart, full of energy, and way too curious for their own good.
I grabbed a few treats to get their attention, showed them I had them in my hand, and then ran out of the room yelling, “Come find me!” They followed me halfway down the hall before stopping in total confusion as I ducked into a closet and held my breath.
At first, they were baffled. I could hear Max whining and sniffing around the living room, while Luna ran back and forth trying to figure out where I disappeared to. For a second, I thought maybe I had stumped them both… but I was wrong.
Luna suddenly froze near the closet door. I could literally hear her sniffing under the crack. Then, she let out a soft bark, like she was signaling Max. Within seconds, both dogs were pawing at the door — tails wagging, eyes wide. They found me.
But instead of just barking or getting excited, Max actually stepped back and gave me this incredibly suspicious look. Like he was offended that I dared to hide from him. Luna, on the other hand, wagged her tail and licked my face the second I opened the door. Classic reactions for both of them.
So I did what any curious dog owner would do: I tried again. This time, I climbed behind the shower curtain in the bathroom. It took a little longer — about two minutes — but Luna sniffed her way right to the tub. When she pulled the curtain aside with her paw (yes, she’s that clever), Max barked and jumped in like he’d just won a prize.
What surprised me most wasn’t just how quickly they adapted to the game, but how suspicious they became of everything. Every time I walked into another room, their heads would snap toward me like I was about to vanish again. It turned into a full-blown trust issue — they followed me everywhere for the rest of the day!
Playing hide and seek with my dogs turned out to be one of the best bonding activities I’ve ever done. It reminded me how smart and emotionally tuned-in dogs really are. They weren’t just playing — they were trying to figure out what the heck I was doing and whether they needed to be concerned.
If you’ve never played this game with your dogs, I highly recommend it. Just don’t be surprised if they don’t let you out of their sight afterward!
