Amy Schumer jokingly claimed that John Cena was “actually inside her” during the filming of an intimate scene in their movie.
In the 2015 romantic comedy Trainwreck, Amy Schumer played a commitment-averse party girl named Amy, starring opposite John Cena, who took on the role of Steven, her muscle-bound, overly earnest boyfriend.
While Amy’s character resists the idea of monogamy, she ends up in a series of unexpected relationships—one of the most notable being with Steven. Their brief romance culminates in a hilariously awkward and risqué bedroom scene that has become a standout moment from the film. Both Schumer and Cena have openly reflected on the scene in interviews, often sharing behind-the-scenes laughs about filming such an intimate moment.

Amy Schumer has openly joked about her experience filming the steamy scene with John Cena in Trainwreck, expressing amazement at his impressive build. Speaking to the Daily Star, she quipped, “It’s a whole universe, that butt… It’s not even human. It felt like having a refrigerator on top of me.”
Always one to lean into the laughs, Schumer added, “I think it was probably harder for him. He had to, like, do something. I just did what I usually do when I have sex—just lay there.”
She even poked fun at herself with a tongue-in-cheek confession: “You know what? I didn’t get to feel his balls. It’s a major regret of mine. Major regret.”
Meanwhile, John Cena offered his own take on the scene, calling the moment “awkward” during a 2015 interview on Conan. “It was awkward,” he admitted. “And they wanted awkward, so we gave them awkward.”

During an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, John Cena opened up about the unique challenges of filming his risqué scene in Trainwreck.
He recalled being surprised by the direction the production took: “Amy is an angel—she made the environment so comfortable,” Cena said. “But then they told me, ‘Yeah, it’s a sex scene. We want it to be wild, over-the-top stunt sex. And all those lines you learned? We’re probably not going to use them.’”
Despite being no stranger to performing in front of massive crowds as a professional wrestler, Cena admitted that filming a simulated sex scene was a whole different beast.
“This is the thing—people at home think it’s just the two of us,” he explained. “But there’s a whole f***ing world behind the camera. Catering’s right there, the sound tent is over there—there’s so many people involved in making a movie. There’s nothing intimate about it. Nothing. It’s actually kind of embarrassing.”
He continued, “They were like, ‘Make it as awkward as possible.’ And trying to do that with a full audience of crew watching? That’s something else.”
“I’m not saying it sucks,” Cena added with a laugh. “It’s just not what people imagine it is.”

Following Cena’s candid podcast appearance, Amy Schumer couldn’t resist chiming in with a playful response. Taking to her Instagram Stories, she posted a video of herself lounging in bed with a cheeky caption: “John, how dare you.”
Doubling down on the joke, she added, “That sex scene meant a lot to me, and I was, like, very into it. And I’m in love with you.”
Meanwhile, Cena revealed that the scene caused a bit of real-life tension with his then-girlfriend, WWE star Nikki Bella. In a previous interview, he admitted he didn’t give her a heads-up beforehand.
“Nicole had every right to be upset,” he confessed. “I never really approached her with, ‘Hey, I’m doing this scene.’ I should have told her from the start.”
Schumer has also spilled her own behind-the-scenes secrets from filming the scene—proving that while it may have looked outrageous on screen, the awkwardness and absurdity behind the camera made it even more unforgettable.

While appearing on an Australian talk show, Amy Schumer was asked how she managed to keep a straight face during her steamy scene with John Cena in Trainwreck. Without missing a beat, she joked, “Because he was actually inside me. Who am I to stop him?”
Though clearly said in jest, the comment added another layer of comedy to the already buzz-worthy scene.
Her co-star Bill Hader, who was also part of the interview, played along and added, “Wrestlers—they’re not faking. When they’re wrestlers, they don’t fake!”
Schumer grinned and replied, “It’s real.”
Their playful banter only further highlighted the fun, offbeat chemistry among the cast during the making of the film.

Amy Schumer and John Cena’s Infamous Trainwreck Scene Still Has Everyone Talking
Trainwreck, the 2015 romantic comedy written by and starring Amy Schumer, has no shortage of hilarious—and occasionally outrageous—moments. But one scene in particular, involving a very intimate encounter between Schumer and WWE superstar John Cena, continues to steal the spotlight years later.
Schumer plays Amy, a commitment-phobic writer who avoids monogamy at all costs. That is, until she finds herself unexpectedly caught up in several romantic entanglements—one of the most memorable being with Steven, a gym-obsessed boyfriend played by Cena.
Their chemistry results in a hilariously awkward bedroom scene that has since become a fan favorite—and a recurring topic of conversation for both actors.
“It Felt Like a Refrigerator on Top of Me”
Schumer has never been shy about sharing behind-the-scenes details. Speaking to Daily Star, she described her astonishment at Cena’s physique:
“It’s a whole universe, that butt… It’s not even human. It felt like having a refrigerator on top of me.”
She continued with her trademark humor:
“I think it was probably harder for him. He had to, like, do something. I just did what I usually do when I have sex—just lay there.”
Schumer even joked about one lingering regret from the experience:
“You know what? I didn’t get to feel his balls. It’s a major regret of mine. Major regret.”
Cena Calls It “Real Embarrassing”
Cena, meanwhile, admitted the experience was far from comfortable. In a 2015 interview on Conan, he recalled:
“It was awkward. And they wanted awkward, so we gave them awkward.”
More recently, Cena appeared on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast and elaborated on how the scene came together.
“Amy is an angel—she made the environment so comfortable,” he said. “Then they told me, ‘Yeah, it’s a sex scene. We want it to be elaborate, crazy stunt sex. And forget the lines—we’re not using them.’”
Even with years of wrestling under his belt, Cena confessed that filming a simulated sex scene was a whole different kind of pressure:
“People think it’s just the two actors. But there’s a whole f**ing world back here. Catering’s right there, the sound tent’s over there… there’s nothing intimate about it. It’s real embarrassing.”*
He added, “They literally said, ‘Try to have the most awkward sex you possibly can.’ Doing that with 30 people watching? It’s weird. I’m not saying it sucks—it’s just not what people imagine.”
Schumer’s Playful Response—and Nikki Bella’s Reaction
After the podcast went viral, Schumer playfully responded on Instagram, posting a video of herself in bed with the caption:
“John, how dare you.”
She added, “That sex scene meant a lot to me. I was very into it. And I’m in love with you.”
Cena also revealed he didn’t initially tell his then-partner, WWE star Nikki Bella, about the scene.
“Nicole had every right to be upset,” he admitted in a past interview. “I should’ve told her from the beginning.”
“Who Am I to Stop Him?”
In another hilarious interview on an Australian talk show, Schumer was asked how she managed to keep a straight face during the scene. Her deadpan reply:
“Because he was actually inside me. Who am I to stop him?”
Though clearly joking, the line added to the ongoing humor surrounding their on-screen dynamic.
Co-star Bill Hader, who was also present, chimed in:
“Wrestlers—they don’t fake!”
Schumer grinned and added: “It’s real.”
